A hand-painted work on rice paper depicting the Japanese maple.

Meaning of the maple tree

Due to its appearance, the maple tree symbolises elegance, grace, impermanence and the transience of things. In autumn it sheds all its leaves; in Zen gardens, these are not gathered until the very last one has fallen.

Description

Further explanations:
The calligraphy in the top right-hand corner is the artist’s signature, bearing the Butsu seal, meaning ‘Buddha’.
The grass-style calligraphy (bottom left) is a poem by Master Sengai, 18th century, Japan: ‘Serve yourself and have a cup of tea.’ It bears the seal ‘Gyo’, meaning ‘to practise, to repeat’.

The rice paper is mounted on a white polypropylene backing:
This is an innovative mounting technique using modern materials, a multi-stage process requiring great concentration and experience.

The result is excellent: the backing makes the paper more durable; the artwork acquires a certain rigidity, ideal for framing.
The colours are produced using coloured inks.

For framing the artwork:
Although the rice paper has a backing, it remains delicate and dust tends to settle on it, so we recommend placing it under glass.
You can choose a simple frame that complements the simplicity of the painting, or opt to add a passe-partout first.
