The giant bamboo – Phyllostachys edulis or ‘moso’
Of the approximately 1,500 varieties of bamboo found across the globe, it is fair to say that the Moso is the most significant of them all.
Phyllostachys edulis, or pubescens, commonly known as “moso”, is a grass, and therefore, to all intents and purposes, a herbaceous plant, even though, thanks to its characteristics, it can grow much taller than a tree.
This giant bamboo owes its success to a particular biological strategy: unlike all other herbaceous plants, it is able to replace its leaves at the exact same point where they were originally produced. In this way, the giant bamboo plant renews itself every year without ‘ageing’, thereby optimising its vital activity.
The culms of Phyllostachys edulis can reach heights of 25–30 metres, but usually grow to around 15–20 metres. All moso culms grow at a surprising rate (even exceeding one metre a day) until they reach their maximum height, which they achieve within a couple of months; after that, they cease growing for the rest of their lives, neither in height nor in diameter.
The flowering of the moso, like that of all bamboos, is something of a mystery: it follows an 80–100-year cycle, leading to the simultaneous flowering of all plants with the same genetic makeup, which are severely weakened by this exceptional event.
Further information:
The rice paper is mounted on a white polypropylene backing:
This is an innovative mounting technique using modern materials, a multi-stage process requiring great concentration and expertise.
The result is excellent: the backing makes the paper more durable; the artwork acquires a certain rigidity, ideal for framing.
The colours are produced using coloured inks.
Framing the artwork:
Although the rice paper has a backing, it remains delicate and dust tends to settle on it, so we recommend placing it under glass.
You can choose a simple frame that complements the simplicity of the painting, or opt to add a passe-partout first.
