The Meaning of Bamboo
Bamboo thrives throughout all four seasons: this is its steadfastness. Its stalk is a symbol of perfection, uprightness and integrity. Even when facing many difficulties, bamboo maintains its stance and remains courageous and strong, without any fear.
Orchids, bamboo, plum trees and chrysanthemums represent the KI, or vital energy, of the four seasons and
the four stages of human life, and are considered the ‘Four Nobles’.

Moso bamboo
The giant bamboo Phyllostachys edulis, known as ‘moso’, is one of around 1,500 varieties of bamboo found on Earth and is probably the most important. It is a grass, and therefore a herbaceous plant, although it can grow to a height greater than many trees.

One of its biological peculiarities is its ability to renew its leaves every year at the same point of emergence, allowing the plant to regenerate continuously without ‘ageing’.

The canes can reach heights of 25–30 metres (more commonly 15–20 metres) and grow with extraordinary speed, even exceeding one metre a day, reaching their final height in about two months. After this period, they no longer increase in either height or diameter.

The flowering of the moso bamboo is rare and still partly mysterious: it occurs in cycles of approximately 80–100 years and involves plants with the same genetic makeup simultaneously, leaving them severely weakened.
