Hand-painted artwork on bamboo paper depicting a Koi carp.
The significance of the carp:
A Chinese legend tells of a carp swimming upstream along the Yellow River, facing a thousand hardships and dangers. Impressed by its determination, the gods transformed it into a dragon and granted it immortality.
The meaning of this tale emphasises that anyone, through sheer willpower and after much effort and sacrifice, can achieve great feats. In China and especially in Japan, the carp is a symbol of courage and perseverance. Its virtues also define it as the alter ego of the samurai: courageous, strong and patient.
