The red spider lily is known as higanbana, the flower of the equinox, and is associated with the worship and celebration of ancestors. It is also regarded as an almost divine flower that grows in paradise, a symbol of elevation and spirituality.

The grass-style calligraphy is a poem by Master Sengai, 18th century, Japan: ‘Help yourself and have a cup of tea.’
Beneath the calligraphy is the seal ‘Gyo’: to practise, to repeat.
Rice paper, stiff and thin.
The colours are produced using coloured inks.
To frame the artwork:
Although the rice paper has a backing, it remains delicate and dust tends to settle on it, so we recommend placing it under glass.
You may choose a simple frame that complements the simplicity of the painting, or opt to add a passe-partout first.
